Online Countertop Quoting: Square Feet, Edges and Cut-Outs

How to give an online countertop quote that holds up: square footage by shape, edge profiles by linear foot, cut-outs, backsplash and a template deposit.

An online countertop quote that holds up needs to price three things separately: the slab area in square feet, the finished edges by the linear foot, and each cut-out as a line item. When a homeowner can enter their layout, pick material and edge, and see those three parts add up, they get a realistic number and you get a lead that already knows roughly what the job costs.

Why an online countertop quote is hard to get right

Countertops are priced on geometry, and homeowners do not think in geometry. They think "L-shaped kitchen with an island". The fabricator thinks in pieces, square footage, seams, exposed edges and holes.

A good online quote translates between the two. It asks questions the homeowner can answer and does the math the fabricator would do. It also makes clear that the final price is confirmed at template, which protects you when the real measurements differ.

Square footage by shape

Start with the layout. Offer common shapes as choices instead of asking for a drawing:

  • Straight run
  • L-shape
  • U-shape
  • Galley (two runs)
  • Island (rectangle, with or without overhang)
  • Peninsula

For each piece, ask for length and depth. A typical kitchen counter depth is around 25 to 25.5 inches front to back once installed, so you can prefill depth and let people change it. Islands with seating need extra depth for the overhang.

The checkout calculates square feet per piece and totals them. For L and U shapes, it should avoid double-counting the corner where two runs meet.

A worked example

Say a homeowner has an L-shaped kitchen: one run of 120 inches and one of 96 inches, both 25.5 inches deep, plus a 72 by 36 inch island.

Piece Calculation Square feet
Run A 120 x 25.5 / 144 21.3
Run B (minus corner overlap) (96 minus 25.5) x 25.5 / 144 12.5
Island 72 x 36 / 144 18.0
Total 51.7

Your price per square foot by material then gives the slab cost. These numbers are for illustration only, and the total is rounded.

Edges by the linear foot

Edge profiles are usually priced per linear foot of finished edge, and only the exposed edges count. A run against a wall has one finished front edge. An island may have all four sides finished.

To quote edges online:

  1. Ask which sides of each piece are exposed, with a simple diagram.
  2. Offer the edge profiles you fabricate, with a picture of each.
  3. Include a standard edge in the base price if that is how you sell, and price upgrades per linear foot.
  4. Total the exposed linear feet and multiply by the profile price.

Edges are easy for homeowners to under-estimate, so showing that line separately builds trust in the total.

Cut-outs and extras

Each hole or special detail is its own line:

  • Undermount sink cut-out (often with polishing)
  • Drop-in sink cut-out
  • Cooktop cut-out
  • Faucet holes, priced per hole
  • Outlet cut-outs in a backsplash
  • Radius corners or other shaping

Let the buyer add these by piece, so the quote shows the sink cut-out on Run A and the cooktop on the island. That also gives your template team useful notes before they arrive.

Backsplash, seams and removal

A complete online countertop quote also asks about:

  • Backsplash height (a short splash, full height, or none), priced by square or linear foot.
  • Seam placement preferences, if the run exceeds the slab size you stock.
  • Tear-out and disposal of the existing top, as a flat or per-square-foot fee.
  • Installation, if it is priced separately.

Any of these can be optional. The key is that the buyer sees them before they see a total, so the number does not change at the template visit for reasons they were never told about.

Turning the quote into a booked job

The online quote gets the conversation started. The template visit makes it real. A common approach is to take a deposit when the template is booked, then confirm the final price from the template. That approach is covered in template-visit deposits for countertop fabricators.

Before the deposit is taken, show a final review of every piece, edge and cut-out in one list. That one screen can prevent disputes later. See the final review step that cuts wrong-size orders, and for the broader payment choice, deposits vs. pay in full.

How Inlay handles this

  • Inlay's guided checkout includes countertop rules: square footage with waste factors, edge profiles priced by the linear foot, and cut-outs as line items.
  • A final review step shows every piece and option before the customer submits.
  • You can take a deposit through your own Stripe account, and Inlay takes 0% of sales.
  • Customers can save their quote for later, and automated emails cover confirmations, reminders and abandoned-quote follow-ups.
